certificates of calibration

What is a certificate of calibration?

How University Pipette Service Certifies Pipettes

Why are Certificates of Calibration Important?

A calibration certificate is an official document that verifies the accuracy and precision of a pipette after it has undergone calibration, ensuring it meets industry standards like ISO 8655. The certificate provides a detailed record of the calibration process, documenting the pipette’s performance and compliance with necessary regulations. This ensures that the pipette is working properly, providing reliable and reproducible results in laboratory settings.

Why are Certificates of Calibration Important?

Calibration certificates are crucial for maintaining compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and other regulatory standards. They ensure that pipettes are functioning correctly, which is essential for generating accurate lab data. For labs following GLP, calibration certificates provide evidence that all equipment used meets regulatory standards, helping labs maintain data integrity, pass audits, and reduce the risk of errors.

Detailed Information Included in a Calibration Certificate

What makes University Pipette Service unique is our comprehensive calibration process. We go beyond standard procedures by taking a total of thirty readings for each pipette:

  • Five readings at the high, mid-range, and low volumes in the "AS FOUND" condition (before service).
  • Five readings at the high, mid-range, and low volumes after the pipette has been serviced and recalibrated.

This detailed approach ensures a thorough evaluation of the pipette’s performance, both before and after service, across its entire range. This level of testing ensures the highest level of reliability, giving labs confidence in their equipment’s accuracy.

Detailed Information Included in a Calibration Certificate

A University Pipette Service calibration certificate provides comprehensive details, including:

  1. Pipette Serial Number: A unique identifier for tracking the pipette’s calibration history.
  2. Model and Manufacturer: Identification of the make and model of the pipette tested.
  3. Calibration Results:
    • Mean Volume: The average volume dispensed during testing.
    • Target Volume: The intended volume the pipette is set to deliver.
    • Standard Deviation: A measure of how consistently the pipette dispenses liquid (precision).
    • Actual RSD% (Relative Standard Deviation): The observed precision, expressed as a percentage of the mean.
    • Manufacturer’s Projected RSD%: The precision specification provided by the manufacturer as a reference.
    • Actual Inaccuracy Percentage: The deviation between the mean dispensed volume and the target volume, indicating the pipette’s accuracy.
    • Manufacturer’s Projected Inaccuracy Percentage: The accuracy specification provided by the manufacturer for comparison.

           4.  Calibration Date: The date the calibration was performed, ensuring timely recalibration schedules.

          5. Next Calibration Due Date: To help maintain regular calibration intervals.

           6. Technician’s Name and Signature: Ensures accountability and      traceability by identifying the technician performing the calibration.

Environmental Conditions: Information on temperature, humidity, and other factors that could affect calibration results.

Equipment Used: Details of the calibration tools and balances used during the process.

Regulatory Compliance and Audits

Calibration certificates ensure compliance with regulatory bodies like the FDA, ISO, and other oversight organizations. These certificates serve as proof that pipettes meet industry standards for accuracy and precision, helping labs adhere to guidelines required by these regulatory bodies:

  • FDA Compliance: Calibration certificates are required for FDA-regulated laboratories to demonstrate that pipettes produce accurate results. This documentation is essential for passing FDA audits and inspections.
  • ISO Compliance: Adhering to ISO standards, such as ISO 8655, requires routine calibration of pipettes to ensure they operate within the correct tolerances. Our certificates provide proof of compliance, helping labs maintain their accreditation.

By maintaining accurate calibration records, labs can:

  • Ensure Data Integrity: Accurate calibration prevents discrepancies in testing and research results.
  • Support Audits and Inspections: Proper documentation helps labs stay audit-ready and compliant.
  • Mitigate Risk: Using non-calibrated pipettes can lead to regulatory fines, faulty data, or product recalls.
